On a small volcanic island off the coast of Chile lies a mystery that has puzzled researchers for centuries. Isla Mocha, once home to the enigmatic camelids known as "chilihueques," has left behind very few traces of these fascinating creatures. But why did they disappear, and where did they come from?
The Role of Camelids in South American Societies
In ancient South American cultures, camelids were of immense cultural and practical importance. These animals provided essential resources such as wool, meat, and transport. Isla Mocha, located 35 km from the mainland, is no exception. Camelid remains discovered here offer clues about the role they played in this isolated community.
“When Dutch and Spanish explorers reached the island in the early 17th century, they found that domesticated camelids called ‘chilihueques’ played a major role in the island’s society.” (Westbury et al., 2016)
Who Were the Chilihueques?
Descriptions of chilihueques in early texts often differ. They were said to resemble sheep with long necks, humps, and camel-like features, leading to confusion about their exact species. Some argued they were a unique species, while others suggested they were simply domesticated guanacos or llamas.
The research conducted by Michael Westbury and his team provides vital genetic evidence, which has helped untangle some of these historical discrepancies. Their study concludes that the chilihueques were most likely domesticated guanacos, not llamas as some had previously believed.
“Phylogenetic analyses suggest that ‘chilihueque’ was a local term for a domesticated guanaco.” (Westbury et al., 2016)
Disappearance of the Chilihueques
While the arrival of Europeans likely contributed to their extinction, other factors, such as the introduction of new livestock like horses and sheep, may have also played a role. Understanding why these animals vanished can help us better grasp how human interactions with the environment can have lasting impacts.
